![]() Guides and Packers for Trophy Hunts
| |
Since 1978 Meadow Creek Outfitters has held exclusive professional hunting rights
to 50 square miles of some of the most beautiful and rugged country on earth. You will be in the
heart of the largest wilderness area in the United States—the Selway Bitterroot. And it's home
to the largest naturally surviving elk herd in the world. Bear and
mule deer abound here, too. You'll see some whitetails, as well, and the bucks tend to be huge.
This is elk, deer and bear hunting at its very best, in one of the most productive areas of the country.
These are wilderness hunts, and all U.S. wilderness areas exclude motorized equipment—that means snowmobiles, chain saws and anything else with a motor. Yes, we cut our wood by hand. You will not encounter other outfitters here. This is your chance for a quality wilderness hunt—from the majestic high-mountain habitat, to our experienced guides, to the equipment and trail-savvy horses and mules we use. This is good stuff. You'll remember it as long as you live. ![]() THE CAMPS
Peak, where you will find Highline Lakes. Set in high granite canyons, these alpine lakes offer
good fishing for trout. They are definitely worth visiting so bring along your light tackle.
We operate out of three camps, all with tents. For sleeping we provide 12'X 14' wall tents that house 3 or 4 hunters. Each is equipped with cots and a propane heater. We set up a separate cook tent with propane cook stove, table, lanterns, and wood heating stove. We make your camp a comfortable place to come back to after a hard days hunt. We offer both guided and non-guided (drop-camp) hunts. On the guided hunts we pride ourselves on our down-home cooking—good food and plenty of it. To get you going right, we start your day with a hearty breakfast. We send lunches with each hunter. If you return to camp during the day you'll find our full-time cook has a hot pot of stew or chili waiting for you, and there's always plenty of hot coffee. You can expect a hot homemede dinner every night.
Otter Butte.
We run our guided hunts from this camp. From the trailhead we leave the Selway River on horseback.
It's a four hour ride in to our Otter Butte
camp. The site lies on a timbered bench at about 5,000 feet elevation. On arrival we set up the 5 tents
and get you fed while we plot strategy for the morning hunt. Some of the areas we hunt from this camp
can be a 3 hour ride. It's open hillside country so we'll be doing a lot of glassing. At some time
during your stay
we will hunt near Highline Lakes, up around 7,300 feet. On a clear day you can see Montana's El Capitan
Peak from there. The fishing is great so bring your light tackle. We'll have a trout lunch right at the
lake. This high country produces some of the biggest elk racks anywhere, and it's trophy mule deer
country, too.
At Meadow Creek Outfitters we pride ourselves on the personal attention we pay to our hunters. We use only the most experienced guides, who are expert at matching hunter to situation. They know the country, the game and the stock. They will be with you and they won't get you in over your head. We like to limit our Otter Butte camp to six hunters but special groups may be accomodated. However, in a given year we bring in only 25 clients here. Everyone benefits when we encourage a healthy population of big bulls.
Jim's Creek is a six hour ride from the trailhead, probably the most remote camp in the Selway. And it produces some of the biggest bulls. It is rugged country up here, with big timber. The camp itself is located right on the creek at about 5,000 feet. There is little chance you will see another hunter. Your hunt at Jim's Creek will be a true wilderness experience, and not for everyone.
Copper Butte.
This is our other drop-camp. In a canyon, on a stream, the Copper Butte camp offers a most beautiful
setting. The area is great for 2-3 hunters, four max. It's big open country with
lots of elk and mule deer. As a matter of fact, the November hunt at Copper Butte is as close to a
sure-fire producer of elk as you will ever get.
Enjoy hair-raising experiences? Pay attention the first night. If you don't build a fire and everyone keeps still, you will have elk bugling right through the middle of camp. ![]() THE MEADOW CREEK PHILOSOPHY | |
